Factors That Influence the Amount of Protein Necessary to Maximize the Anabolic Response of Muscle following Resistance Exercise

چکیده

• The metabolic basis for changes in muscle mass is net muscle protein balance, i.e., the balance between muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB). Changes in MPS are responsible for a much greater proportion of the change in net muscle protein balance than are changes in MPB. • Many factors influence the response of MPS to protein ingestion following resistance exercise. However, the amount of protein consumed in a single serving following exercise is the most important factor that determines the magnitude of the MPS response. • The increase in MPS with increasing amounts of ingested protein is not infinite and plateaus at some optimal amount of ingested protein. • The optimal amount of protein to consume following exercise varies depending on a number of factors, including the characteristics of the exercise bout (i.e., leg-only vs. whole-body), the age of the individual, type of protein ingested and possibly the amount of muscle mass an individual possesses. • The ingestion of 20-25 g of high-quality protein seems to be sufficient to maximally stimulate MPS in healthy young males following leg-only resistance exercise. However, it is clear that ingesting 20 g of protein does not maximally stimulate MPS under all circumstances. • The amount of protein necessary to maximally stimulate MPS increases when exercising with greater amounts of muscle, increasing age and ingestion of proteins with inferior amino acid compositions.

What is the Optimal Amount of Protein to Support Post-Exercise Skeletal Muscle Reconditioning in the Older Adult?

Hyperaminoacidemia following protein ingestion enhances the anabolic effect of resistance-type exercise by increasing the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis and attenuating the exercise-mediated increase in muscle protein breakdown rates. Although factors such as the source of protein ingested and the timing of intake relative to exercise can impact post-exercise muscle protein synthesis r...

Dietary protein to support muscle hypertrophy.

Intact protein, protein hydrolysates, and free amino acids are popular ingredients in contemporary sports nutrition, and have been suggested to augment post-exercise recovery. Protein and/or amino acid ingestion stimulates skeletal muscle protein synthesis, inhibits protein breakdown and, as such, stimulates muscle protein accretion following resistance and endurance type exercise. This has bee...

The Response of Skeletal Muscle-Expressed Neurotrophins to Acute Resistance Exercise in Male Wistar Rats

Background. BDNF and NT-4/5 have been proposed to be involved in the coordinated adaptations of the neuromuscular system to the elevated level of activity, but an activity-dependent expression of neurotrophins in skeletal muscle is not well established. Objectives. We, therefore, investigated the effect of one session of resistance exercise on mRNA expression of some neurotrophins in Slow and ...

Evaluation of The Acute Hormonal Responses To Concentric, Eccentric And Concentric_ Eccentric Muscle Actions in Healthy Young Men

Evaluation of The Acute Hormonal Responses To Concentric, Eccentric And Concentric_ Eccentric Muscle Actions in Healthy Young Men Introduction: Resistance exercise is a potent stimulus for acute increase in the concentrations of circulating hormones such as Growth Hormone (GH) and Testosterone. Conventional resistance exercise is performed using sequential concentric (CON) and eccentric (EC...

Structural changes of cardiac tissue in response to L-carnitine supplementation during endurance training in Wistar male rats toxicated by steroid anabolic hormone

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the structural changes of cardiac tissue in response to L-carnitine supplementation and endurance training in Wistar male rats toxicated by steroid anabolic hormone. Methods: 36 male Wistar rats aged 8-12 weeks (weight 195±7.94g) were randomly divided into six groups: Control, Non-treated, Boldenone (5 mg/kg), L-carnitine (100 mg pe...
